Thursday night brought reports of trade talks heating up between the Yankees and Pirates for Gerrit Cole, with the possibility added by George King of the New York Post that Josh Harrison may also be involved. The trade did not happen while this episode was being recorded, though there is a chance that it will have happened by the time you get to listen to this, so, if it has, sorry, but as of 1 a.m. on Friday as this was going up, Cole still was in Pittsburgh.
Some reading material was promised within the show, and it’s the right thing to do anyway to post the links to the full versions of the articles that I read from, so here’s Jeff Passan at Yahoo Sports and King’s story for the Post.
More reading material from Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, with not one, but two pieces from Thursday in which Jacoby Ellsbury is bandied about as a possibility for the San Francisco Giants. It would still seem that any potential Ellsbury move is a ways off, like, after the Giants exhaust other options — and it would still require Ellsbury to waive his no-trade clause. But there’s movement away from “they’re stuck with him” on that front, so it’s worth talking about.
Mailbag Friday sort of starts with Ellsbury, but the final segment this time is the real meat of the mailbag, which features dumping on the Mets, the Yankees getting ready to hit a lot of dingers, and the infield situation, which obviously hangs in the balance if indeed Harrison winds up part of a Cole deal, as has been advocated previously on this show.
