Happy pitchers and catchers day! It’s the day you’ve waited for all winter… and for what?

For nothing, that’s what, other than for a little bit of a sense that spring is closer. You’re still not going to get to see any actual baseball being played for a week and a half. You’ve been snookered again by the spring training-industrial complex. Sorry.

Also, the Yankees did not sign Yu Darvish, who went to the Cubs. That’s okay, really. Like, it’s too bad that we won’t all get to watch one of the best in the game pitch every five days, but the Yankees do have other options to upgrade their rotation before the start of the season, both via trade and via free agency. And if they do nothing, well, they have a rotation of Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, Sonny Gray, CC Sabathia, and Jordan Montgomery, with Chance Adams and Justus Sheffield waiting in the wings, and capable fill-in starting options with Luis Cessa, Chad Green, and Adam Warren. Now, it’s understandable if you don’t want to see Luis Cessa start a Yankees game in 2018. You’re probably right! But the options are there, spring training is starting, and all we can do is wait and see what happens.

Meanwhile, whoever is pitching for the Yankees this year will not be working with Goose Gossage as a spring training instructor, because the Yankees finally grew tired of the annual rite of “Goose Gossage says something embarrassing and creates headlines,” which led to Goose Gossage saying something embarrassing and creating headlines. So, let’s all be glad that’s settled!

Coming later this week… who knows? Pitchers and catchers are down in Tampa, so while we don’t have actual baseball, we do have baseball activities that will dictate the news. And then, soon enough, baseball!
